Every journey includes a dedicated on-board guardian who focuses on the children while the professional driver focuses on driving. On this website, guardian means a trained on-board companion, not the child's parent or legal guardian.
Guardians complete our selection, onboarding and training process before joining a route. Our guardian standard covers:
Child safeguarding
Passenger and vehicle safety procedures
Age-appropriate restraint systems
First-aid awareness and emergency procedures
Attendance and identity checks
Secure collection and handover procedures
Calm, respectful communication with children
Multilingual support
We work with multilingual guardians who can communicate with children and families in the languages used by the communities we serve. Families can share their preferred language during registration, and language matching is provided where team availability allows.
Connected to the community
Wherever possible, guardians are recruited from or connected to the neighbourhoods and communities served by Kita Bus. Familiarity with local families, cultures and languages helps children feel recognised, reassured and comfortable.
What the guardian does
During each journey, the guardian:
Welcomes and checks in each child
Helps children board and settle into their seats
Supports the correct use of child restraint systems
Monitors comfort and wellbeing during the journey
Maintains the attendance record
Coordinates with the driver and operations team
Supports the agreed handover process
Communicates relevant journey information to authorised contacts
